How do coding agents open and merge changes?

Agents that write pull requests on their own: how many, how they are reviewed, and how many merge.

93 passages from 31 organizations; 87 checked against the source.

What the record shows

Uber, Shopify, Ramp, Dropbox and Monzo count pull requests from their own agents

Uber's Ty Smith said one in nine of its pull requests is fully production ready with zero human authoring from background agents. Shopify's CEO said about one in eight pull requests merged in one week was authored by its River agent and reviewed by staff. Ramp says about 30% of pull requests merged to its frontend and backend repos are written by its agent Inspect. Dropbox says its agent platform Nova accounts for roughly 1 in 12 pull requests, and Monzo says its agent authors about 10% of merged pull requests.

From Ty Smith (Uber), Tobi Lütke (Shopify), Zach Bruggeman (Ramp), Dropbox and Monzo.

Several organizations say a person still reviews or merges agent work

Uber's CTO said its background coding agent writes the code entirely while engineers review and approve. A Stripe engineer said its agent-written pull requests are human-reviewed but contain no human-written code. Vercel and Warp, which both sell AI tooling, say a human merges every change, and Warp adds that a human approves the spec first. Airbnb's CTO said every engineer must be able to explain what they built, even if an AI generated the pull request.

From Praveen Neppalli Naga (Uber), Alistair Gray (Stripe), Vercel, Warp and Ahmad Al-Dahle (Airbnb).

Others let some agent changes merge with no person in the loop

Spotify says it has merged more than 2.5 million automated maintenance pull requests, the vast majority auto-merged with no human in the loop. A Genentech engineer said the team lets its bot merge directly into the main branch because it has integration, unit and canary tests. OpenAI, which sells Codex, says its agents often squash and merge their own pull requests. A Shopify principal engineer lists automated PR review as a mode that often has no human in the loop.

From Spotify, Xiucheng Quek (Genentech), OpenAI and Burke Libbey (Shopify).

Zendesk and PostHog describe how people review agent pull requests

A Zendesk engineering post says pull requests arrive faster than human-driven review can stay meaningful. PostHog says agents write about 70% of its pull requests and humans still skim at least 80% of those. Zendesk and PostHog both sell AI products.

From Bence A. Tóth (Zendesk) and Jina Yoon (PostHog).

These summaries are this site's, not quotations. Each was checked by a second reader, who confirmed it says no more than the passages it cites. The organizations' own words follow.

Inspect has a million sessions, 75% of our PRs is actually built by Inspect, and 1,000 of those PRs over the last month was submitted by a non-engineer.

It observes the relevant monitoring graphs, but can also build its own dashboard to monitor important signals. More of our code changes are going to production with this kind of agent monitoring.

And what this does is when Claude builds a new package or adds a dependency that's leaky, we now have CI/CD changing or a simple git commit history that tells us exactly where things break. I got tired of watching old feature flags pile up… I built an agent for cleaning up stale feature flags. It runs in my local workflow and it doesn't merge any code. The models, the easy part. The judgment in front of it is the whole game. Every flag gets scored the way an experienced reviewer would analyze it. How many modules does it touch? Is it multi-variant? Does it share a component? Then it checks the experiment data. Is the rollout frozen? Is there a sample ratio mismatch? Is there a variant already rolled out to 100 percent?

The software factory starts with signals from the outside world: bug reports, internal conversations, customer feedback, business requirements. These signals get triaged and turned into planned changes. These changes are built, tested, reviewed, secured, shipped, and monitored. Monitoring that deployed software generates more signals. The entire system is a continuous feedback loop.
