Does AI make developers more productive?

Claims about output per engineer, speed of delivery and how they were measured.

What the record shows

Meta, Uber, Airbnb and Bank of America report engineering gains

Meta said on its earnings call that output per engineer rose 30% since the start of 2025, with the majority of that growth coming from agentic coding. Uber's CFO said it is seeing doubling in the code output for engineers. Airbnb's CEO said the number of features and improvements it shipped this year rose by nearly 80%. Bank of America says 19,000 software developers have experienced efficiency gains of over 20% through real-time coding assistance.

From Meta, Balaji Krishnamurthy (Uber), Brian Chesky (Airbnb) and Bank of America.

Airbnb, Spotify, Anthropic and OpenAI report increases in pull request counts

Airbnb says pull request throughput is 65% higher than before it introduced agentic AI. Spotify reports a 76% increase in pull request frequency, and says total merged changes more than doubled year over year in August, from roughly 8,100 to 17,000. Anthropic, which sells Claude Code, says its data roughly corroborates a 67% increase in merged pull requests. OpenAI, which sells Codex, says engineers using it ship about 70% more merged pull requests.

From Christopher Sanson (Airbnb), Spotify, Spotify, Anthropic and OpenAI.

Meta and Airbnb report stronger gains for some groups of AI users

Meta said power users of AI coding tools increased their output 80% year over year. An Airbnb product lead said that for about 50 users, pull request throughput was “like 3X higher again.”

From Meta and Christopher Sanson (Airbnb).

More output adds load on review and build systems, some say

A Zendesk engineering post says pull requests arrive faster than human-driven review can stay meaningful. An OpenAI engineering VP said some systems saw roughly a 10x increase in load in about six months. A Stripe tech lead said its roughly 50,000 builds a week keep increasing as AI adoption speeds up commit rates. Zendesk and OpenAI both sell AI products.

From Bence A. Tóth (Zendesk), Venkat Venkataramani (OpenAI) and Aditya Anchuri (Stripe).

Since the beginning of 2025, we've seen a 30% increase in output per engineer, with the majority of that growth coming from the adoption of agentic coding, which saw a big jump in Q4.
