Organizations report AI writing more than half of their code

Airbnb's CEO said nearly 60% of the code its engineers produce is now written by AI. Shopify's president said AI writes well over 50% of its code. Dropbox says it is around 70% AI-generated code, and Ramp says its agent Inspect writes more than two-thirds of its code. Google, which sells AI, says 75% of its new code is AI-generated and approved by engineers. Anthropic, which sells Claude, says more than 80% of the code it merged as of May 2026 was authored by Claude.

The share depends on what is counted

Uber's CTO gave two figures: about 70% of committed code is AI-generated within traditional editors, while code written entirely by its background agent with zero human authoring went from under 1% of code changes to 8%. Walmart counts new code that is either AI-generated or AI-assisted, over 40% combined. Coinbase's head of platform said 95% to 100% is written by or with LLMs. Google, which sells AI, earlier counted code checked in from people accepting AI suggestions, then well over 30%.

Google, which sells AI, says 75% of new code is AI-generated and approved by engineers, up from 50% the previous fall. Coinbase's CEO said about 40% of daily code was AI-generated and that he wanted it above 50% by October. Uber's CTO said code written entirely by its background agent went from under 1% of all code changes to 8% in a few months. Shopify's president said the share is going up significantly.

Today, … used by several tens of thousands of engineers every single week to review all of their code. So we also know, generally speaking, the number of pull requests that each of these people are writing. The median … user writes 50 pull requests a month, so call it about … per work day. The 90th percentile writes 500 pull requests per month. That is a drastic difference between the median and the P90. The P99 is in the thousands of pull requests.

And I like to define what we've been calling frontier developers inside of Amazon by three behaviors that I've been seeing. One is hands off coding, frontier developers write maybe … of the code that they produce. The rest is agents. The second is that they interact with their agents infrequently.
